The 'Quirky' New Wave

Here's a well-written article on the subject of movies called The 'Quirky' New Wave. Some knowledge required, as director and movie namedropping occur. From the article:

"I, like most other right-minded people, hate the word 'quirky': it seems to lead far too easily to other distasteful terms such as 'wacky', 'zany', or even that most pointless of critical adjectives: 'weird'. So try to imagine my dismay when, time and again, I read reviews that consistently tar some of my favourite new American films with the quirky brush. What exactly does this word mean to these reviewers? And what is it about these films that makes them so quirky?"

Hannibal Rising

Normally I stick to movie recommendations, but Hannibal Rising deserves a warning. It sucks. Nothing Lecter about it whatsoever - and the movie just generally stinks. And what's up with the mask? Unless Hannibal chose to wear that scary mask in prison in the original movie, that just makes no sense at all. Suffice it to say that this quote paints a clear picture of both dialog and storyline:

"Memory is like a knife. It can hurt you."
Rotten Tomatoes, always good for some harsh words and rating it at 8%, has a list of movie critic reviews.

The movie Crank is a good action flick starring Jason Statham. If you can appreciate the über-hyper editing, and you're into action, you'll like it. 9 out of 10 in my book.

Scary Mary Poppins Trailer

Remixing movies is right up my alley. Hats off to Moviemker for this example called Scary Mary Poppins' Trailer.

Cookers

Guess it's time for an indie movie recommendation - and I'm talking the original sense of the word indie. Cookers is a paranoia story about two young outlaw drug addicts, who steal a van-load of chemicals used to cook crystal-meth. The couple sets up a lab in a rural farmhouse intent on cooking a batch of grade-A speed. Strange and terrifying things start to happen at the house and they don't know if they're hallucinating from all the speed or if it's real... The brilliant meth addict portrayal warrants a 9 out of 10 in my book.

The Departed

The Departed is the new Scorsese movie, and it is good. I give it 9 out of 10.

Casino Royale

The new Bond movie Casino Royale is excellent. It has been some years since I liked a Bond movie, but this one reinvents the series. 9 out of 10 in my book. 8.1 at IMDB. 95% at RottenTomatoes.

Cinemateket/Filmhusets Still-Foto Samling

Ved du godt, at Cinemateket - bedre kendt som Filmhuset - har en virkelig imponerende still-foto samling? Hvis jeg husker rigtigt, fik jeg engang at vide, at det er en af de største i verden. Jeg har været derinde nogle gange, med en liste, jeg havde skrevet hjemmefra. Man får nemlig ikke lov til at komme i selve arkivet. Man spørger om lov til at se stills fra en bestemt film. Arkivaren henter dem, og et par hvide handsker, man skal have på, når man behandler dem. Sejt. Jeg har endnu ikke ramt en film, de ikke har haft i hvert fald nogle stills fra. Priserne er rimelige, synes jeg (jeg kan ikke huske dem præcist), og du kan få print helt op i plakat-størrelse, fordi det er rigtige fotos.

Carnivale

You *need* to check out the two-season series Carnivale. The setting is a travelling carnival in 1934 America. Think freak show, magic and prostitutes.



HBO ended the show after the second season, which is a real sign of character.

Carnivale first season at the time of writing costs 24£ at Amazon.co.uk. Pretty cheap. Get it.

Youtube & Co

Seriously - you need to spend some hours roaming the wonderful archive that is Youtube. An amazing amount of movie, tv and home video clips, music videos and everything else, more or less.
Other similar sites include MetaCafe, iFilm, Google Video and DailyMotion.

Movie Stuff

If you like movies, here's a couple of ressources.
IMDB - Internet Movie DataBase is one of the most impressive databases online. I have never drawn a blank - not even with regards to obscure, 'foreign' movies.
Rotten Tomatoes is a collection of movie reviews from a lot of (mostly American) sources. The generel opinion at the site is sometimes surprising. Be prepared for some stereotypical hammering. Metacritic is a similar site.
Filmz is a danish site, which works. It brings you news on movies and the industry.
I also recommend Apple's trailer-site, if your in the mood for trailers and teasers. The amount is pretty impressive, and it's updated.

Garden State

As far as comedy/drama/romance goes, you can do nothing but worse than Garden State. I lost most hope for the genre a while ago, but Zach Braff's directing debut hits home. 10 out of 10 in my book. You can watch the teaser below. I recommend that you do, it's a rare piece of teaser/trailer art. If you're into those things.

Sideways

Prøvede at skrive en filmanmeldelse. Filmen er Sideways, og som det fremgår, kan jeg rigtig godt lide den. Har lige fundet ud af, at den har vundet 91 priser, så det var der åbenbart også andre, der kunne. Men gør dig selv en tjeneste, og lad være at se traileren. Den sucker.

Brick

I give nine out of ten to the movie Brick (8.0 at IMDB), because it's kick-ass style-wise. It's a noir detective story, and the setting is high school USA. I think you will be pleasantly surprised if you like it (sic). It won the Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision. Here's a bit about the plot, and below is the trailer. If you're into those things.

Weeds

I highly recommend the show Weeds. It follows a suburbian single mother selling weed, and the mood of the show is just excellent.

If you like martial arts movies, you'll like this. Jet Li and Quentin Tarantino host a show where they talk martial art movies and their own experiences with kung fu movies. It's in three parts. Part 2 and 3.

I recommend the english drug crime movie Layer Cake. 9 out of 10 in my book.

The Century of the Self

I cannot recommend highly enough the documentary 4-part BBC series The Century of the Self. It tells the fascinating and scary story of the use of public relations as a means to public management. The quality of the video is low, but I think the content makes up for it.

Documentaries

throwawayyourtv hosts, among a lot of other cool things, an impressive collection of full length documentaries. I'm not so sure about the copyright issue, but hey - information wants to be free.

Reservoir Dogs - The Game

Check out this excellent commercial for Reservoir Dogs - The Game. It has kids in it.

The Proporsition

I recommend the movie The Proporsition. It's an atmospheric anti-western, set in Australia. Good acting. Nick Cave wrote the script and made the soundtrack together with the violinist Warren Ellis from Dirty Three.

Free Movies

Today you get a bunch of free movies fallen out of copyright. You can find all sorts of stuff: commercial movies, documentaries, cartoons and stand-up. I especially like the educational movies, like Duck and Cover (1951).

Jeg er ret vild med BitTorrent-systemet. BitTorrent er en ny teknologi på fildelingsområdet, der tager over hvor Napster, Kazaa og lignende systemer faldt af. Du kan finde en god guide hos Piratgruppen, der hedder Kom igang med uTorrent.

The Slip-Up Archive is a collection of movie slip-ups. A lot of people enjoy spotting those little, mostly unimportant, mistakes. Now these people have their place on the net, too.

Propaganda Tactics and Fahrenheit 9/11

Seeing Fahrenheit 9/11 I was amazed by the overuse of psychological tricks. I felt the movie was a shameful example of propaganda at it's worse, which irritated me since I found Columbine to be a good documentary. In the article Propaganda Tactics and Fahrenheit 9/11 Dr. Kelton Rhoads uses the movie as a case study in propaganda. I recommend it highly.
