Something To Hide

"If you aren't doing anything wrong,
what do you have to hide?"

"If I'm not doing anything wrong,
then you have no cause to watch me."

X-Series

Although my previous experiences with 3 Mobile left me with contempt towards the company, the coming x-series seems really interesting. Maybe they will actually provide the promised services this time. It does seem a little too good to be true, though - I'm looking forward to see the pricing scheme. X-series is launching 1. december in UK, 1. quarter of 2007 in DK.

How Cellular Phones Work

The article Cellular Telephone Basics taught me how cellular phones actually works. Nice. As a shorter, but not superficial, intro to the subject I also recommend How Cellular Phones Work from the excellent site Howstuffworks.

Web Science - Field of Study

It's good to read that Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the www-technology, is leading an initiative to make web science a field of study. I've been waiting for this. I'm totally joining these guys.

"The Web has become such a force in commerce and culture that a group of leading university researchers now deems it worthy of its own field of study.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Southampton in Britain plan to announce today that they are starting a joint research program in Web science."

...and Learn to Love the Internet

Douglas Adams, brilliant author of the hilarious novel The Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe, wrote the article How to Stop Worrying and Learn to Love the Internet in 1999. Besides being funny and insightful, it provides good answers to the very irritating statement "you can't trust everything you find on the net".

20 Smart Companies to Start Now

From the article 20 Smart Companies to Start Now - Business 2.0 Magazine, CNNMoney.com:

"Asking venture capitalists for great startup ideas is a little like asking Curt Schilling what pitch he's going to throw next. When we posed the question to dozens of VCs and investors around the country, more than a few indignantly shot back, "Are you out of your mind?"

But after some friendly prodding from our reporters, a surprising number of them couldn't help but start jawing about companies they would love to build - if only the right people could be found to perfect the technologies or the business plans and make them seem possible.

The result is this list of 20 tantalizing business ideas, ranging from a host of new websites and applications to next-generation power sources and a luxury housing development. This isn't small-time thinking, either: These investors -which include some of Silicon Valley's most successful VCs as well as serial entrepreneurs like Steve Case and Howard Schultz are backing their ideas with a collective $100 million in funding to the entrepreneurs who can get them off the ground."

Another sweet source of information here at ddavid.dk - Where Information Comes to Hang Out. Berkeley University of California has been so kind as to put online podcasts of series of lectures. You will find both audio and video, and you will find it here.

The Eternal Value of Privacy

Bruce Schneier, my main security mayn, states the case of privacy in the essay The Eternal Value of Privacy. Among other things you will find some nice answers to the (quite silly) question "If you aren't doing anything wrong, what do you have to hide?"

Security Now

I highly recommend GRC's Security Now podcast with Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte to the technically inclined. It's 36 episodes and counting of high quality education on computer security related subjects, with a focus on the basics, brilliantly explained by the very competent Steve Gibson.

A certain basic level of knowledge of computer theory is required.

Knoppix

If you ever wondered what this Linux thing is, Knoppix is what you want. It is a live Linux DVD, meaning you boot from it, and there's no installation involved. When you are done you just reboot, and you're back in Windows. But that dosn't mean it is Linux Light. It (most likely) packs all the applikations you would want. And it is free. You can download the Knoppix DVD here, and the Knoppix CD here, and then burn the file to a DVD/CD as an image.

Participatory Panopticon

Rigtig interessant perspektiv.
